What is vegan leather? Materials, durability, and differences compared with traditional leather

Vegan leather is a collective term for materials that offer the look and feel of leather but are made without animal-derived components. The materials range from polyurethane (PU) and plant-based raw materials such as apple waste, cactus, and cork to recycled plastics. The term therefore says nothing about a single material - only what it does NOT contain: animal hide. In this article, you'll get an overview of the materials available, how durable they are, and how to recognize good quality.

What types of vegan leather are available?

PU-based vegan leather (polyurethane)

The standard for high-quality vegan bags. A polyurethane coating on a textile backing creates a material that feels soft, remains flexible, and can be produced in almost any texture and color - from smooth leather-look finishes to crocodile embossing. Modern PU qualities are abrasion-resistant, water-repellent, and significantly more durable than their reputation suggests; recycled content is increasingly being used. Material thickness is important: thin film materials from the low-price segment tear at edges and seams, while high-quality smooth PU-based vegan leather lasts for years.

Apple leather

Made from pomace left over from juice production, which is processed into powder and bound with PU. Depending on the manufacturer, the plant-based content is around 20 to 30 percent. It has an attractive, subtly textured appearance and is more expensive than classic PU.

Cactus leather

Made from the leaves of the nopal cactus, which grows without irrigation - making its water footprint correspondingly good. It has a soft feel, but availability is currently limited and prices are higher.

Cork and other plant-based materials

Cork is harvested from cork oak trees without felling them and is naturally water-repellent - but it is clearly recognizable as cork, so it comes down to personal taste. Other newcomers include pineapple fiber (Piñatex) and mushroom-based materials, which are still in the process of being scaled up.

How durable is vegan leather really?

The honest answer: it depends on the quality, not the label. High-quality vegan smooth leather withstands years of daily use, is resistant to rain, and does not develop water stains - a real everyday advantage over animal leather. Cheap film materials, on the other hand, can become brittle after just a few months. You can check three quality features directly: the material thickness (does it feel substantial or like a film?), the edges (cleanly sealed rather than exposed), and the seams (straight, tightly stitched, and free of loose threads).

Vegan leather and animal leather compared in everyday use

  • Water and stains: Vegan leather is water-repellent and can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. Animal leather needs waterproofing and conditioning.
  • Weight: Vegan bags are usually noticeably lighter.
  • Care requirements: A damp cloth instead of leather conditioner - you'll find the instructions in the care guide.
  • Patina: Animal leather visibly ages and changes color. Vegan leather retains its appearance - whether that is an advantage or disadvantage is a matter of personal taste.
  • Ethics and the environment: No animal suffering, no tanning chemicals, and lower emissions during production.
